Some Surfers knowledge
Well Surf Compas here in C.R. and around the world ! I am going to give a little history on my surf knowledge of my area. As I have been living here on this specific beach in Manuel Antonio for 16 years now. I think, I can say I know the breaks quite well!
The old days of watching the barrier Islands and the way the swells hit them, was how I judged swell direction. Size then, was based on how big it was judging by how much white water came up over those barrier islands. Scale was Big, real Big, mas o menus and so on.
Bueno, now I have had Internet for over 6 years and have taught myself how to read the storms out in the Pacific, the currents, and tides etc.etc. Kind of like the old days in the Gulf, watching the weather channels for cold fronts pushing down and Hurricanes moving up!
And since I have been surfing now for more than 42 years and come from the Gulf of Mexico originally. I think I can say I know what I am talking about. Although everyone is capable of a blunder, so forgive me if I make a bad call!
In M/A we need at least 7.50 ft. of water and deeper for the breaks to work right. Right now these tides are at night. We get four tides in twenty four hour period. Two lows. Two highs. Every 6 hours the tide changes, some times we have tides of, 13ft. high and minus 3ft. lows. A total of 16ft. of water moving in and out in a 6 hour period. " a lot of water" Sometimes like right now we have a 7.25 high and a plus 2 ft. low a 5 ft. tide moving , not much water.
When that happens and there is no swell, its FLAT!
If by chance there is a big! swell those tides can be great for a few of our breaks here.
Like the Park, or the Quepos Jetty. If some one from here, is reading this now! and thinks I named there breaks, GET OVER it DUDE~ We have not been able to surf the park for 5 years now do to some @#!@# administrator! and the Jetty has not been the same since the Marina came to town. There are however two others breaks, that I will not mention!
So for us here and me in particular, We need tides in the 8ft. height and up with a good swell pushing from the South, Southwest, or West. High tide about 5a.m and up to 10.am to get good clean dawn patrol surf. These conditions usually happen two weeks out of every month at different times of each month. This is why watching the tide charts is sooo important. Not just the swell report. Every break has different circumstances I know my area, not all. This is why I have asked my friends around the country to give me their professional look at surf in their area. We should all be grateful to them and send them very warm Pura Vidas.
Now for those who new nothing of this before I hope you took the time to read it carefully and learned a little from the Old dude!
Keep it simple smile in the line up and like Frank R. said." Give the the tourist a wave every now and then" that is Pura Vida!
